Comportement d'un pieu sous sollicitations transversales

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
Again, from the Karl Von Terzaghi school in France. "Behavior of stakes under transveral solicitations?" I highly doubt it.

Thanks!

Discussion

Bourth (X) Dec 10, 2010:
Lateral or transverse? "Lateral" (of loading) is more common and indeed standard, but there is a case to be had for "transverse". "Transverse" implies "across the pile". As does "lateral", of course. But "lateral", used with a different parameter, means "along the pile", as in "lateral friction" (the friction along the sides of the pile, as opposed to the friction at the toe) (which is of course a good reason for preferring "skin friction").
Similarly, "lateral load" might be said (loosely) of "off-centre axial load".
Still, "lateral" rules.

The ref. is predominantly compression design, but there are early references to "transversal"

I've no real argument between transversal-, lateral-, or side-loading.

Thank you! Enormously helpful.

Thanks
agree asptech : I would use "horizontal" loads (since most piles are more or less vertical) for better visualization.

Thanks - yes, but as you hint, there are inclined settings.

pile behavior under the horizontal pile head load

Little context but I think that this is what they mean.
Pieu would be a pile not a stake.

"pile behavior under (the) horizontal pile head load

Not horizontal but lateral

Pile behaviour under lateral loading (or under lateral load)

agree chris collister : Your last offering is spot-on, Bob! Maybe "performance"...

disagree Richard Hedger : Sorry, but I don't agree with the head load bit - the lateral loads can be applied throughout the length of the pile, i.e. soil-pile interaction during earthquakes
