Comment: "I think that it may be a crime that is not covered by any specific law other than what is in the Code Civil, so you are closer than the other answerers. But the questions wasn't stated very clearly... Regards, Andre"

non-political crime
Wider and different than/to 'common assault & battery'
Droit de A a Z: droit commun = ensemble des regles de droit normalement applicable a toutes les les situations juridiques en dehors de textes specifiques.
I agree with Gilles' standard neutral rendering of ordinary law. The connotation of Common Law is Brit. Commonwealth/ non-equity/ unwritten Eng. law etc. etc.
CANADIAN parallel-text case-quote from weblink:
'b) Qu'elles ont commis un *crime grave de droit commun* en dehors du pays d'accueil avant d'y être admises comme réfugiés;
(b) he has committed a *serious non-political crime* outside the country of refuge prior to his admission to that country as a refugee;'

: Depends on context. It has also been translated as non-political crime in the Declaration of Human Rights (Article 14).

Agree again with context point and kind of 'official' translation. But, then again, 'possessions' (in brown paper bags?) for biens in the ECHR Convention is an off. trans.!
