German term

rattenkistendoll

German to English Medical Medical: Health Care Mental illness
"Er ist ja rattenkistendoll" cited as an example of a health care professional being insensitive when talking about a patient. I am thinking "completely off his rocker" or something similar. I look forward to hearing your ideas. Many thanks in advance.

Discussion

franglish Mar 5, 2016:
refers... TO crazy.
franglish Mar 5, 2016:
@mbrodie I agree with LittleBalu - and with you - that 'doll' refers crazy. Crack-brained is a synonym for crazy; nothing to do with the substance crack, in case this is the association which occured to you. Melanie's 'crazy as a loon', or 'mad as a hatter', are gentler alternatives.
Out of curiosity, is this a psychiatrist or psychologist talking of his patient?
Melanie Meyer Mar 4, 2016:
He's as crazy as a loon ... is another option.
Ulrike Kraemer Mar 4, 2016:
@Kristina Cosumano & Asker: This is one possible meaning of "doll" = greatly, strongly. But not in this context. Here, doll is a colloquial expression meaning "toll" = crazy, wild. Rattenkistendoll = absolutely crazy, absolutely insane.
Maureen Millington-Brodie (asker) Mar 4, 2016:
@Franglish:which thesaurus? Hi all, Sorry if I have been ambiguous - it is a comment being made by a doctor about a patient.
Kristina Cosumano (X) Mar 4, 2016:
In northern Germany, doll seems to be used to mean -strongly-, rather than -crazy-. If Rattenkisten has another meaning, I don't know it. Could you say "he's got the sensitivity of a box of rats?"

I assume your context is this:

"Bedlamite" is an archaic, seldomly used term for "lunatic" which fits into a mental hospital environment (it's derived from Bedlam, Hospital of Saint Mary of Bethlehem, a former London institution for the insane)
