"La prise de direction par l'assureur de la défense de l'assuré ne vaut pas renonciation pour l'assureur à se prévaloir de toute exception de garantie dont il n'aurait pas eu connaissance au moment même où il a pris la direction de cette défense."
To be honest this whole sentence does not seem to make much sense to me, so any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

It's a bit difficult to translate just the text you posted, butI'm feeling generous so here's the whole sentence.

The insurance company is handling the defense case of the insured. Taking on the defense case of the insured does not take away their right to deny coverage for things for which they may not have had knowledge at the time they took over the case.
