Does the couple's relationship change as the story unfolds

Bernie is quite right about the hyphen that should appear between "changent" and "ils".

Does the nature of the relationship between the couple change...

...throughout the story/over time?

IMPORTANT - I am assuming that the comma in the question text should be a hyphen. If this is not the case, then please ignore my suggested answer.
Peer comment(s):

agree Noel Castelino : There is definitely a hypen missing. And my guess is that the comment is about the relationship in the story itself.

Have marital relations evolved down through the years?

Or:
Has the husband/wife relationship changed in the course of history?

If the reference is to Guy de Maupassant\'s short story, you might tighten the phrasing to \"since the 18th Century\" (or was it 19th?)

Does the relationship between man and wife

alter over the course of the story?

This story concerns an impoverished woman who borrows a necklace for a special event, and the bauble is lost. To pay it back the couple must work like fools, only to learn (at the ned of the story) from the rich lady who loaned the trinket that it was "made of paste", or in today's term, costume jewelry.

So the answer to your test question is a resounding "yes!" Imagine the resentment building over time whilst paying off this stupid debt.
