Defined in the Webster's as: famous, celebrated, eminent.

Which BTW could be also used for ilustre.

This is for "ciudadano ilustre". I understand it is Chilean Municipalities that grant the "hijo ilustre", but I've never seen it in English. However, I think the idea is the same, so Honorary Son should be OK, albeit a bit too literal.

brilliant or illustrious

1) first, is this son as in the metaphor "son of the nation"?
In that case, there is great precedent for the word illustrious. If it means actual son, we have no way of knowing that.
2) second, many of the answers will do the trick but you would obtain a better translation by providing us with the context; otherwise, only dictionary translation can be given.
3) Illustrious is a very strong word. In my opinion, no other words quite conveys its strength. Another word that conveys that meaning is BRILLIANT because it is connected to lustre meaning to shine.
