Discussion

French Foodie Oct 25, 2005:
Vaughn, could you let us know what you ended up putting for this? Parcourir is always a tricky one, so I'd love to see the solution in this particular case.
David Vaughn (asker) Oct 13, 2005:
Yes, I appreciated seeing the quote & even pushed my rush jobs to the back burner to read some of the article, which is better than his translation. Thanks again Nick.
Nick Lingris Oct 13, 2005:
I know, Vaughn. If I'd liked it, do you think I would have set my confidence at 3? But I thought I should let you know, all the same. It's probably a useful link.
Jennifer White Oct 13, 2005:
then why don't you say "My writing is a voyage of self-discovery"?
David Vaughn (asker) Oct 13, 2005:
Jennifer - the word choice "discover" is ordinary compared to "parcourir"

Nick - thanks for the quote of Azrad's translation. Unfortunately, it's a bad translation.
David Vaughn (asker) Oct 13, 2005:
Voyage Michaux is being quoted in my translation. For the author's intention, I'm hoping to find an idea where "parcourir" has a connection with voyaging/travelling.

I write to traverse myself

This is Hugo Azerad's rendition.
http://clcwebjournal.lib.purdue.edu/clcweb02-3/azerad02.html

"to travel through myself" is another way of saying it if you don't want to anglicise it completely.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : and that rendition is errrrrful...doesn't know English or French...sorry.....parcourir is to walk through or wander through..not a traverse...might as well say to cross myself...hoy vey :)

Or "travel through"? (Other than simply recording Azerad's translation, I won't spend time to support it, though it's not totally invalid - just ugly).

another suggestion. Isn't self-discovery what this is about?

I see you suggested that, but I don't think it's too ordinary.
Peer comment(s):

agree Richard Hedger : I'd go for this - sounds the most natural to me

thanks. Asker seems to think it's too ordinary though!
neutral Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : yes but then it would have been pour me découvir...:)

but isn't this what it means? It's poetic, after all
agree French Foodie : I like what you put in the note above: a voyage of self-discovery

agree Tom Bishop : Yes, I like the "voyage of self-discovery". And it meets David's criterion of incorporating the notion of travelling.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Jennifer White : I know that parcourir means to wander through, but does this really make sense here? sorry, but "wandering through myself" makes no sense to me as it stands

sure..when you are "discovering" yourself, it would be wandering; not going from a to b
