Spanish to English Medical Medical (general)
I am translating a document that lists the specialties of different U.S. hospitals. Several of the lists begin with the phrase "Alta en":

Alta en Cardiología y Cirugía del Corazón, Diabetes Endocrinología, Gastroenterología, Geriatría, Ginecología, Nefrología, Neurología y Neurocirugía, Ortopedia, Neumonología, Urología,
Otras Especialidades en Cáncer, Oído, Nariz y Garganta, Rehabilitación

Does this refer to its areas of specialization? Some sort of certification?

Hi
it makes life very difficult for anybody translating his/her work then, as there are probably other poor inventions in the translation. Strange, as most of my Spanish texts come from excellent Spanish writers.

i I am considering here that it was the writer of the Spanish document that the Wendy is working from who invented the term "alta." That person may not have been a translator, but rather a Spanish speaking writer or researcher trying to express a U.S. reality in Spanish.

@ Liz -- Perhaps not so odd...I think we are not finding this phrasing in Spanish because the writier of the Spanish document we are working on invented the term "alta" to explain the US term ('ranking" or "highly ranked") that he or she found when researching US hospitals.

Many hopsitals on their web pages proudly announce that one or more of their specialty areas are"ranked" "highly-ranked" or "one of the top ranked" specialty areas by, oddly enough, by the magazine "U.S. News and World Report"

For example, a hospital ranked in cardiology and heart surgery—one of 16 specialties in which centers were evaluated—likely has the expertise and experience to replace a faulty heart valve in a man in his 90s. Most hospitals would decline to perform major surgery on elderly patients, as they should if they aren't up to speed on the special techniques and precautions required and don't see many such patients. A ranked hospital in gastroenterology can probably offer the most appropriate care to a patient whose inflammatory bowel disease flares up. At hospitals ranked in neurology and neurosurgery, surgeons face more spinal tumors in a couple of weeks than most community hospitals see in a year.

agree Emma Goldsmith : I came to the same conclusion. I think this may be a rather poor translation of the English "ranked in" as we're talking about US hospitals here.

Thanks Liz, I agree the terminology is strange. However, I am operating on the theory that the term "alta" refers to the "high" ranking. The word "alta" is probably a translation of what the writer of the Spanish article found.
