The chassis/frame forms one 'plate' of a condensor/capacitor, the generator winding forms the second 'plate', and everything in between (mostly air, in this case) is 'insulation' which, in the case of a 'normal' condensor/capacitor, is known as a 'dieletric' (which has a characteristic known as the 'dielectric strength'). |
