"La pancia profonda degli Stati Uniti". E' riferito agli esponenti dell'America provinciale, tradizionalmente vicini agli ambienti repubblicani

Discussion

Miriam Hurley Jan 23, 2011:
underbelly I noticed that underbelly has a double usage. Usually with "soft" underbelly, it seems to mean vulnerable point, whereas alone is seems to mean "a hidden unpleasant or criminal part of society". A flea-ridden mangy dog belly. Unless the context is so strongly negative, I would go with a more colorful way of saying "heartland".

Proposed translations

pot-belly

Without more context, it's not easy to capture the nuances of the derogatory tone. Should I emphasize the hunger of this demographic group (hungry belly) or its unattractive bulge? I opt for the second.

deep in the gut

Of course, depends on context, but you could work with this phrase

Another thought: you could add an adjective to gut to fit the nuance of the context

neutral Miriam Hurley : I think this might be associated too much with crime to fit the context. If it's like in this sentence "un puro e semplice rigurgito di quel cristianesimo fondamentalista che sale dalla “pancia” profonda e rurale degli Stati Uniti...."

neutral Mailand : At first I liked the sound of "underbelly", but after a moment's thought I'd say it sounds a little too negative and, after all, "provincial" and "Republican" do not have a negative connotation for all of us ....

agree Lorraine Buckley (X) : mailand, you may love the Republicans but this article supports a less positive view and uses underbelly to describe the tea party ers at least http://oneutah.org/2009/11/22/twenty-percenters-the-underbel...

saying "underbelly" doesn't necessarily have any left or right politicial connotations. It's an expression that might be used to describe the deep south of any country.

visceral core

The idea here is default values and behaviours, "gut feeling" as Miriam implies. In English, "visceral" is the word that best conveys this notion and "visceral core" is quite frequently used when the writer needs a noun.
