Italian to English Art/Literary Architecture Renovation of a stately home

I am struggling with appropriate translation(s) for the word 'testo', which appears more than once in my text :-)

"Le Grotte costituiscono infatti un variegatissimo * testo polimaterico *, qualificato dalla profusione di differenti materiali che ne incrostano le superfici", which at the moment says in English

"Indeed, the Grottoes are made up of an extremely variegated multi-material *fabric*, distinguished by the profusion of different materials encrusting their surfaces"

and now I have found that for the restoration of walls/façades

"la conservazione e il consolidamento di tutte le porzioni di intonaco ancora coese, anche se frammentarie,
quale prezioso documento materiale del *testo architettonico*, e si è scelto di conservare e rinnovare
i valori cromatici riferibili a quanto attestato dalle stratigrafie più recenti nel tempo"

Here it would seem that 'testo' means *source* (cf proz. http://www.proz.com/kudoz/italian_to_english/art_arts_crafts... i.e. the direct *source of information about the architecture* ......

Any comments/alternative suggestions for the translation of 'testo' in the arty/architectural world? TIA
