German term

Darmgeräusche ubiquitär

German to English Medical Medical (general)
Hallo,

ein Arztbericht, der Patient leidet an Gastroenteritis.

Abd. weich, kein DS, kein AS. DG *ubiquitär*.

Im bereitgestellten TM des Kunden wird ubiquitär mit "overall" übersetzt (ohne Kontext). Wie ist dieser Satz nun zu formulieren? Klingt das mit overall nicht etwas merkwürdig?

Danke!

Discussion

SJLD Sep 7, 2010:
"bowel sounds overall" is nonsense in English. An English-speaking doctor would say whether or not the BS are present, increased or decreased, hypoactive or hyperactive etc. and maybe something about the quality (tinkling, high-pitched) http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3689/is_200006/ai_n8...

We don't usually say whether they can be heard all over the abdomen - but this is what the German means.

This would usually be described as "bowel sounds present and normal".

Bowel sounds present in all (four) quadrants

A bit more specific, but I think by "ubiquitär" they must mean all quadrants. It would rule out the unlikely interpretation of bowel sounds present in chest (diaphragmatic hernia), for example.

Bowel sounds present in all four quadrants. No hepatospleenomegaly. No CVA tenderness.

The next nurse's notes were timed from 3 to 11 p.m., and the patient's abdomen was slightly "extended," tender to touch with bowel sounds present in all quadrants.

Peer comment(s):

agree SJLD : interestingly, this is a notion used by nurses rather than doctors - the fact that BS are present in all four quadrants has absolutely no clinical significance - you either hear them or you don't

ubiquitous bowel sounds

'ubiquitous' means basically the same as Wendy's 'omnipresent', 'everywhere at the same time' - just wanted to present another word choice, even if it does sound as if translated word by word, it is used in medical texts.
And I do agree that 'overall' is just complete nonsene here!
