French term

renvois mécaniques

French to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering
Hi

This refers to a watch mechanism though I imagine it could refer to any mechanism with gears.

It explains how the seconds subdial is usually at 6 o'clock as this is the most natural position given the layout of the gears (la disposition du rouage). However it can be positioned elsewhere, at 9 o'clock for example, "par le biais de renvois mécaniques." All I can think of is "using a system of gears" but I feel I'm selling it short somehow. Expert help will be much appreciated!

Thank you.

Found this while following up Johannes' answer. Interesting:

Because he wanted his Timemaster to offer the best possible legibility, Lang wasn’t interested in the small seconds subdial that this Unitas caliber typically supports. A cleverly constructed "detour" mechanism transforms the small seconds subdial into a central "sweep" seconds-hand. To accomplish this modification, the caliber is equipped with an additional ** transfer wheel ** between the fourth-wheel and the pinion of the center-wheel.

Under the bonnet Perhaps "transfer of motion" could be the solution; to avoid constant references to gears and more gears!

intermediate gear or idler gear (wheel)

en Definition device which is set in motion by the driving shaft of a transmission and which transmits this motion to the driven shaft. An intermediate shaft can either be arranged parallel to the driving and driven shafts,or it can form a line shafting with them

An idler-wheel drive is a system used to transmit the rotation of the main shaft of a motor to another rotating device. For example the platter of a record-reproducing turntable or the crankshaft-to-camshaft gear train of an automobile.

An idler gear is a gear wheel that is inserted between two or more other gear wheels.

The purpose of an idler gear can be two-fold. Firstly, the idler gear will change the direction of rotation of the output shaft. Secondly, an idler gear can assist to reduce the size of the input/output gears whilst maintaining the spacing of the shafts.

An idler gear does not affect the gear ratio between the input and output shafts.
