Re "همزة وصل", please could someone tell me what it means literally?
I was just wondering how it comes to mean "the dissolution of diphthongs into their constituent parts" (e.g. 'ˁaynayn', where 'ay' represents a diphthong becomes 'ˁaynay ilbinti', 'the two eyes of the girl') - the diphthong disappears.

Hamzatul Wasl means exactly what you said, Simon. The main function of the Connective Hamza is to avoid the clash of two vowels making words and sentences flow smoothly. Think of it as the indefinite articles (a,an) in English function-wise I mean. The rules are complicated I'm afraid, hopefully this link will help.

the rules of (Hamzat ul-Wasl ) as follows:
A) : what is the meaning in Arabic of (Hamzat ul-Wasl)?
(A hamza which could be used as a tool to utter a sukoon or the hamza of the linking )
B) (sukoon) means (neutral sound) or in other words, it is not pronounced
