I should know this, but I just don't understant "da quando cioe` venne meno" - I just can't make sense of it...

The punctuation is poor, that's why it doesn't seem to stand up.
Quite honestly I'd get away from the Italian (there's no law saying you have to put in ALL those words) and render the sense with a more English structure.
