ringardiser

French to English Other Other
In an article about high-definition TV by comparison with ADSL access to TV:
"Pour les télévisions, et notamment pourTF1, il est urgent d'attendre. Pour les chaines de télévision il existe pourtant un risque de se voir 'ringardisées' par les nouveaux supports. ... En terme de qualité, le DVD a pris le pas sur la télévision classique. Les chaines de télévision doivent donc faire attention a rester dans la course."

to make something look old-fashioned/old hat in comparison

there might be other ways of saying it but that's the general idea

agree Julia Gal : yes, to be left behind in other words...

agree David Vaughn : simply "look old hat" is not bad, a bit ringard perhaps, but the closest I see for the moment

would fade away / beocme obsolete/ fade into oblivion / casta side

recommend you go with an appropriate expression that contains an allusion to "fading"; it is the most accurate approximation in this context...

uncoolify; fuddy-duddify; decoolify; squarify; antediluvianate; to be made instantly old-fashioned;

Beautiful word, recently coined but immediately understandable - to make something instantaneously old-fashioned. What's more, it's based on a slang word that is itself difficult to translate. A couple of attempts at coining an equivalent term, some of which get a bit of google.

Just wanted to mention that ringard is not neutral like \"out-of-date\", but rather something closer to unhip, uncool. Except that it is formulated in a positive sense, and except for the definately ringard term \"square\", I don\'t see an equivalent slang word in English
