: That's the name of the process, therefore "subculturing" seems more appropriate. "Subculture" is the end result! / "Subculture" is "subcultura", the result of the process!

Yes, of course the verb would have to be adapted to each actual situation. 'Neutral' seem a bit unfair through. An 'agree' with an albeit would have been more appropriate IMHO
