German term

Weissagungen

German to English Medical Medical (general) Gastric bypass
The following are findings in a pelvic CT scan:

Is there possibly a typo here? The only translation I'm getting for Weissaugungen is "prophecies"... thank you very much in advance for any help!

Unfortunately Unfortunately we may never find the answer. The client just classified my query as "Solved" without any additional information - this is the query in which they asked me to add a Translator's Note to my work.
Are we dealing here with an OCRed scan? Human typos and failed OCRs are two different animals ;) It would be easier to figure out the meaning of this particular "prophecy", if we knew what we were dealing with. ;)
thefastshow Jun 6, 2023:
@ andres I was just thinking the same that the original text may have involved "prognosis" in some way. Given the amount of crap one has to deal these days when being presented with machine translations of whatever kind (Yes, it is not unusual to find people in higher positions using chatGPT etc. because they are not firm in a language.) I would not be surprised at all. Since the term is such a wild card this consideration can only be a wild guess of course.
Andres Larsen Jun 5, 2023:
based on the medical prognosis In the stomach, the bypass passes caudally based on the medical prognosis of the interior of the ventral abdominal wall.
The confluence/ anastomosis of the intestinal loops is located in the area of the left lateral abdominal wall.
Lirka Jun 5, 2023:
Aussackung? perhaps they meant "Aussackungen"?
Jessica Klingberg (asker) Jun 5, 2023:
@philgoddard I received a note from a client rep, asking me to put in a translator's note for the time being as they are equally unsure. If I ever get a definitive answer, I will post it here.
philgoddard Jun 5, 2023:
Do let us know if you get an answer, although I know it's unlikely. This one has been going round in my head all afternoon :-)
Steffen Walter Jun 5, 2023:
PDFs ... ... might be fraught with all sorts of issues, including conversion errors and the like. As it stands, the German sentence does not make any sense at all.

Thank you Thanks for all of your input. I have sent a note to the client requesting clarification. I have no guarantee that they'll respond, but we'll see.
This is definitely not a transcription error - I have a copy of the PDF hospital report and the work appears in exactly the same way.

Blick in die Glaskugel Your link includes the synonym/paraphrase "Blick in die Glaskugel", which fits this question particularly well ;-)

I still can't make heads and tails of the use of 'Weissagungen' in the context provided.
However here is a link to a definition of 'Weissagung' which is quite good:

Moritz von Freyhold Jun 5, 2023:
maybe it means "wie vorhergesehen" (as predicted) or "wie vermutet" (as guessed) but this is guess work.
Steffen Walter Jun 5, 2023:
With uyuni Either that or (less likely) a transcription error.
Moritz von Freyhold Jun 5, 2023:
Hi, I’m not specialising in this area but as a native German I can confirm that the sentence has several inaccuracies:

“Bypass” needs an article: “der/ein Bypass”, “verlauft“ should be „verläuft“ (typo) and „vom Weissagungen“ should be „von den Weissagungen“ if the word is correct in the first place; “nach kaudal” should be just “kaudal”.

Given the frequency of inaccuracies I would query what “Weissagungen” is meant to mean.

I hope this helps.

uyuni Jun 5, 2023:
Sounds like an error of automatic speech recognition software...(?)
Jessica Klingberg (asker) Jun 5, 2023:
Third take I'm starting to wonder... could it be that the gastric bypass runs from the viscera inside the ventral abdominal wall in a caudal direction?
I'll have to sleep on this. You may have a point!
Jessica Klingberg (asker) Jun 5, 2023:
Another take Now that I'm re-reading your comment, I see what you mean. But I think "entrails" would be far too general. The way I read the report, they are specifying that the gastric bypass runs from [specific point inside the ventral abdominal wall] in a caudal direction.
Jessica Klingberg (asker) Jun 5, 2023:
No divination I am confident that there is no divination going on here, this is part of a German hospital report on a very ill patient.
I'm more inclined to think that the term is a typo - I just don't know for what word.
Dr. Christopher Kronen Jun 5, 2023:
Augury and divination? Perhaps, this is an unnecessarily obscure way of referring to the entrails?

"augury, prophetic divining of the future by observation of natural phenomena—particularly the behaviour of birds and animals and the examination of their entrails and other parts, but also by scrutiny of man-made objects and situations."

Weichgewebe > soft tissue

The term "Weissagungen" in the context of a pelvic CT scan looks like a typo or an error. The correct term is most likely "Weichgewebe," which translates to "soft tissue" in English.

The translation would then be:
"In the stomach, a bypass extends from the soft tissues of the ventral abdominal wall to the caudal region.
In the area of the left-lateral abdominal wall, the confluence/anastomosis of the intestinal loops is located."
