This is from the memoirs of a New-Zealand-born Argentine (it was written in the 1950s)
Terminando el colegio, trabajé en el campo de mis padres, continué con mi interés por lo militar en los Alexandra’s Mounted Rifles como sargento. Durante el invierno, el rugby era mi pasión, representando en diferentes posiciones como back a la provincia, y actuando como capitán del club local, ganando mi primera “cap,” representativa a los 16 años, contra Tarvanaki Rugby Football Union.
I of course googled "cap" and rugby to see if it is a known distinction . I came upon "honors cap" but the references were pretty general. Thanks!

This concerns 'real' football, but the meaning is the same:
"Moore was made captain of England in 1964, at age 23, going on to lift the World Cup trophy in 1966. He won a total of 108 caps for his country, which at the time of his international retirement in 1973 was a national record."

This refers to cricket, rather that footy-sports, but AKAIK the Anglo-Saxon tradition of giving a player a 'cap' (casqueta) in recognition of his participation in an important match originated in cricket, and the term, if not the actual practice, subsequently migrated to other team sports such as soccer and rugby.
