Spanish term

relaciones de pareja

Spanish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy ICT coordinator posts
SPAIN. This appears in a text about gender differences and accessing the post of ICT coordinator. Again, I know what it means, and usually in English "relationships" would be sufficient in a conversation, as the context should make it clear what we're talking about. However, I'm having trouble finding a way to express the notion formally in a way that I'm comfortable with.

"Las mujeres perciben diferentes obstáculos para la elección de determinados roles como el efecto techo de cristal, los estereotipos de género, tradiciones familiares e incluso las relaciones de pareja..."

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): abe(L)solano

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Chema Nieto Castañón Feb 18, 2020:
Just a late reply; I would also consider the "neutral" partner relations here, as it seems to work fine particularly in a social science context where gender roles might be at play.
Marie Wilson Feb 16, 2020:
Mills and Boon I agree, but at least it's clear, whereas affective relationship could include a wider range of relationships.

romantic relationships

One option. Covers all varieties at least.

There are many different types of relationships. This section focuses on four types of relationships: Family relationships, Friendships, Acquaintanceships and Romantic relationships.

Note from asker:
Comes across rather Mills and Boon... I was thinking more along the lines of "affective"... :-)
Thanks for the suggestion. I don't really like translating gender stuff because it makes me question my own attitudes.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I haven't delivered the translation yet, but I'm probably going to go with this option. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and comments."

One possible option, I guess.
Note from asker:
Cheers. Now it's on my short list of options.

1 hr

relationships between partners

...gender stereotypes, family traditions and even relationships between partners

I think this might sound the most natural in this context.

7 hrs

couples [or] relationships

I don't see this as particularly complicated. "Couples" or "relationships" would cover it.

Alternative: domestic partnerships.
