Italian term

validità biologica

Italian to English Law/Patents Medical (general) damages for personal injury
We have a claim relating to loss and damage “compreso il pregiudizio biologico permanente in ordine alla riduzione della validità biologica, ivi compreso il danno psicologico, estetico, fisiognomico……”

‘Biological validity’ apparently has something to do with scientifically accurate information used in an unbiased way to convey a biological idea. So that clearly won’t do.

I originally thought of 'loss of amenity', but given what the reduction in ‘validita biologico’ includes, I’m not convinced.

Arguably this could have been posted in the law field - I'll try re-posting if this post produces nothing.

right thanks for that Phil

Yes, I agree that they're synonyms.
Fiona Grace Peterson Sep 12, 2018:
Synonyms It's my understanding that "pregiudizio" and "riduzione della validità" are synonyms here - certainly the source text isn't much help as regards wrapping your brain around this stuff. Something like this may work:
"..including the permanent physical impairment expressed in terms of the specific bodily harm suffered, including..."
However this text reminds me why I don't touch legal texts any more (!), and someone else may come up with a better rendering :-)
philgoddard Sep 12, 2018:
You said "I'll try reposting this in law if this produces nothing", and went on to do so. It didn't "produce nothing" - you have one answer already, a perfectly good one in my opinion, and may get more. If you repost a question, it just gets deleted as duplicated. This is medico-legal, so arguably it belongs either under medical or legal.

Coming before it is" (the plaintiff asks the court to) condannare la convenuta al risarcimento di tutti i danni, diretti e indiretti, fisici e morali, patrimoniali e non patrimoniali…

Thanks for your suggestion. As I understand it, however, the “pregiudizio biologico permanente” IS the “riduzione della validita' biologica”, so I'm not sure it works at the moment.

Context What precedes "...comperso il pregiudizio..?" - I can see various possibilities but it all depends on what comes before...

bodily harm

One possible approach might be to translate your sentence "“compreso il pregiudizio biologico permanente in ordine alla riduzione della validità biologica, ivi compreso" as something like (I've put "biological impairment in brackets because I don't know how you intend to translate "pregiudizio biologico"):

"including permanent (biological impairment) resulting from bodily harm, including..."

Low confidence level because there is probably a much better option :-)

"Bodily harm is a legal term of art used in the definition of both statutory and common law offences in Australia, Canada, England and Wales and other common law jurisdictions. It is a synonym for injury or bodily injury and similar expressions, though it may be used with a precise and limited meaning in any given jurisdiction... Non-physical or psychiatric injury can be considered "bodily harm" whether "actual" or "grievous", but there must be formal medical evidence to verify the injury."

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "In the end I dealt with it like this:"permanent impairment in terms of physiological invalidity", but I'm not convinced it's the only valid way to express it. Thanks to all."
