@Fcocito What I wanted to make clear was that it does not relate to any rental or loan arrangements of any kind, it's simply a way in which land redistribution was made available to certain people with the same rights as the majority who would go on to become "ejidatarios" but who, because of their geographical circumstances, were unable to meet the requirements to form an "ejido" proper.

The information provided by Robert brings a pretty clear vision of what is an "acomodo" in Mexico. However everything suggests that an "acomodo" is a provisional arrangement, but in this case (I'll spare you the whole sentence which covers 2 pages) it seems like it led to a formal recognition as a newly formed community ("rindieron protesta de ley", "nombramiento de autoridades comunales", "enunciando a varios campesinos como censo basico", "declarando en nombre del Presidente de la nacion... la entrega material y la posesion legal... de los terrenos...")

Even if it does say "se dio posesión únicamente", that doesn't mean they weren't subsequently given title. We don't know enough about the matter in issue here to say whether this person or group had or should have had title to the land, in some form or other. Ejido is certainly a form of full title, albeit with restrictions on conveyance, and I assume a person to whom land is distributed through "acomodo" would have the same rights and restrictions as a regular "ejidatario".

By the looks of Robin's explanation of the Chilean "acomodato", I don't believe "acomodo" is really that similar at all, since this is specific to the land reform and redistribution era in Mexico, and once these land grants were made, the only way the owner could be dispossessed of title was through eminent domain/compulsory purchase by the state.

What it means Note that the ST says: se dio posesion unicamente, which means they gave "possession" (uso exclusivo), without conceding "ownership" (dominio).

Por vía de acomodo is Mexico’s equivalent of Chile’s acomodato, which is an agreement whereby the legal owner of a property (often the State, or a municipality) allows someone (usually a "worthy cause" such as a junta de vecinos) to use a property free of charge, on the understanding that they must vacate the property at very short notice if the owner needs to repurpose it. In Chile (I don't know about MX) the beneficiary of the acomodato often pays nothing to the owner and is responsible only for the running costs caused by their own use of the property (water, electricity, etc.); those details will be built into the convenio de acomodato.

That said, I don’t know the equivalent term in English (if, indeed, there is one...).

This is a bit tentative, as I don't have a ready-made strategy for it. You might want to take what you need from this an work out your own solution, perhaps even using the original Spanish with footnotes.

"Acomodo" o "acomodamiento" refers to one of the various ways land was redistributed under the "ejido" reforms in the Código Agraria. This specific procedure was designed to "accommodate" those who were eligible for land under the redistribution, but who, for reasons of location and isolation, did not number at least 20 for the purposes of forming an "ejido". In this case, they were settled or "accommodated" on vacant ejido plots.
They weren't required to pay any rent at all, and it certainly wasn't a "free loan", i.e., under the concept of the "commodatum".

In the following pdf document from the UNAM, it mentions six of the agrarian rights provided in that code, namely:

a) Restitución de tierras.
b) Dotación de tierras y aguas.
c) Ampliación de ejidos.
d) Creación de nuevos centros poblacionales
e) Inafectabilidad
f) Acomodamiento en parcelas vacantes

Here's an excerpt regarding this concept from the "LEY FEDERAL DE REFORMA AGRARIA (Publicada en el Diario Oficial de la Federación el 16 de abril de 1971)":

ARTICULO 64.- Cuando los campesinos beneficiados en una resolución presidencial dotatoria manifiesten en Asamblea General que no quieren recibir los bienes objeto de dicha resolución, por decisión expresa cuando menos del noventa por ciento de sus componentes, tales bienes quedarán a disposición del Ejecutivo Federal sólo con el fin de que en ellos se acomode a los ejidatarios con derecho a salvo. Para llevar a cabo este acomodo se preferirá a quienes quedaron sin tierras en los ejidos de la entidad federativa correspondiente, y entre ellos, a los que habiten en los núcleos de población más cercanos.

Here are a couple of other references to this procedure.

El Código Agrario de 1940, en los artículos 90 y 163, estableció que, para efectos de una dotación, ampliación, creación del nuevo centro de población y acomodo en tierras ejidales excedentes, tendrían en cuenta a las mujeres solteras o viudas, si tenían familia a su cargo.

The nearest concept I can come up with in English is "peppercorn rent", which is a nominal (close to worthless) rent paid to a landlord for the lease of a property. It meets the legal requirement for a contract to provide for "consideration" to both parties (i.e., a contract is invalid if the landlord receives absolutely nothing in return for allowing use of the property).
