Discussion

Björn Vrooman Feb 20, 2017:
I wanted to suggest that to Elli earlier ("colorful events"), since it googles well with carnival. However, I believe she's right about brevity being important.

Alternatively, if it can get "lengthier," maybe you could say "a whole host/range of other colorful events."
Jacek Kloskowski Feb 20, 2017:
The context suggests marketing ad or leaflet about the events. I do not think this is in any way related to multikulki meaning. If you really want to capture the word "colorful" then maybe "a lot of colorful events" would do.
Erzsébet Czopyk Feb 20, 2017:
@Johanna please post as an answer...
Eleanore Strauss Feb 19, 2017:
@Bjorn Thank you. Very astute insight, and I agree regarding "multikulturell" (Swiss often call it multikulti).

Also agree on 'assortment', which usually refers to tangibles. I ok'd that answer because it included the colorful... Given the purpose of the headline, "a whole lot more" best captures the message and mood for foreigners (especially Amis) and it has the necessary brevity.

If you use a colorful variety or even "lots of fun things" or "a kaleidoscope of other happenings' it tends to get cumbersome.

Best.
Björn Vrooman Feb 19, 2017:
@Elli I think I get what you're saying and I'd support your notion that this is more than just a "lot more" of something. I also do not agree with Johanna's references for the simple reason that Switzerland, let's say, has a very distinct approach towards "multikulturell" and I wouldn't have thought of the word in this context.

Aside from the length, I just don't think "assortment of" is the right register or do you disagree? It just doesn't have the same "flow" to it if you know what I mean.

Best
Eleanore Strauss Feb 19, 2017:
All the references to German (and I mean Germany) and the intellectual definitions in no way mirror the truly colorful, very special goings on in the Valais (where Saas Fee is located) and some of the other individual pockets in tiny but diverse CH.

@phil Goddard It's Bunt because it's dialect
philgoddard Feb 19, 2017:
The context suggests it might mean "and lots more", but I don't feel that any of the answers proves it. And why is it Bunt rather than Buntes?

agree phillee : Sounds good to me

Thank you. This seems to me equally idiomatic.
agree BrigitteHilgner : Yes - because "Bunt" doesn't just relate to activities/events but to people (active/spectators, young/old, etc.), too.

Thank you for your input :)
agree Björn Vrooman : Not sure I entirely agree with Brigitte after some discussion, but that doesn't change my agreement. You should keep it equally simple and short in EN. Some of the other answers seem too...elaborate.

Thanks :)
agree Eleanore Strauss : not bad, but doesn't really reflect the truly colorful goings-on at this event and in the region

or 'a wide variety of other happenings'

Let's see if somebody can come up with something shorter..

agree Eleanore Strauss : The guggenmusik tells it...music most closely associated with local folklore esp during carnival (fassnacht)

a whole host of other activities besides

I think "Bunt" has a rough sense of "variegated" here - in other words, a wide variety or a whole host of different activities that are on offer.

many other exciting events

I'd keep it as short and simple as possible for a heading. I'm not sure we'd describe any events as 'colourful' in English unless they were costumed or carnivalesque, so I'd convey the 'Bunt' as exciting.

This reminds me of Karneval. Maybe the Bunt refers to the costumes.
