public de la première heure

French to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters music
This is apparently a widely-used expression in French but I can't work out exactly what it means.
The context I have encountered it in is a brief article on a blues music festival:
"Le Blues a cette force de réunir les passionnés connaisseurs comme les dilettantes, le public de la première heure comme la jeune génération."
What is the contrast being made?

also, the first fans are not necessarily the long-standing fans - they may desert their idols if they change too much later.
That's the kind of unnecessary assumptions that can totally distort the meaning of a ST in a translation.

"Public de la première heure" "Public de la première heure" very unambiguously refers to the very first fans, often used in popular music for people who were fans before a first recording or immediately following it, for example. The translator's job in cases like this is not to translate the words, but the meaning, even when the author is sloppy.

indeed... these were more or less my exact thoughts...
So I wondered (after looking at other occurrences of the phrase) if the idea was more like the audience who always show up to concerts, who are at the front of the queue?
But in any case is there a similar phrase if it is in fact the first meaning? 'old hands, old timers...?'

Surely... ...it means 'the public who knew it when it first came out'? Though any of those still around for blues would be pretty old by now, I'd have thought! Assuming they were around 20 when it first came out...

Although, like Tony M mentioned, Blues have been here for so long that it would be virtually impossible to find any "early day fans" nowadays...
Example sentence:
