condensación retrocardiaca

Medical
Medical: Cardiology
x-ray findings
This is taken from a Spanish hospital report, a patient examination, and specifically the chest x-ray:
RX tórax: Cardiomegalia. Probable condensación retrocardiaca. pinzamiento de SCF izquierdo.
The patient was suffering from pneumonia and congestive heart failuire
Thanks!

retrocardiac consolidation
In Spanish condensación and consolidación are synonymous in this context. In English consolidation is used.

"Patrón alveolar
También llamado patrón de afectación del espacio aéreo, consiste en la sustitución del aire presente en el espacio aéreo pulmonar por otro material de mayor densidad radiográfica (exudado o trasudado) y por tanto se manifiesta como un aumento de densidad que puede ser focal, lobular o afectar a uno o ambos pulmones. También se conoce como condensación del espacio aéreo."

"A pulmonary consolidation is a region of (normally compressible) lung tissue that has filled with liquid, a condition marked by induration (swelling or hardening of normally soft tissue) of a normally aerated lung. It is considered a radiologic sign. Consolidation occurs through accumulation of inflammatory cellular exudate in the alveoli and adjoining ducts. Simply, it is defined as alveolar space that contains liquid instead of gas."

retrocardiac compression
The source term only seems to have 36 hits itself on Google, so is clearly not a commonly used term. "Condensación" can be "compression" in this context, so this would be my best bet - with a similarly low hit rate, I fear.

retrocardiac density, retrocardiac shadow
Increased density (= decreased air content) of those portions of the lung situated behind the heart.

"left lower lobe collapse
- look for retrocardiac density and loss of the medial hemidiaphragm
- there may be a classic sail sign, but don't count on it"

Charles Davis
: Hi Anne. It does say "probable condensación retrocardiaca"; in other words, it seems to refer to what's probably going on rather than what they can see // I understand now. "Density" is evidently a valid option here.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon that the radiologist cannot definitely see whether or not density is increased, in particular when the retrocardiac space is concerned (you will find phrases like "Suggestion of [retrocardiac] density" or similar).

: Hi Anne. How are "density" and "consolidation" different?

Hi Joseph, to my knowledge they are not different, and you could use density, consolidation, opacity, or even shadow – all meaning: lung tissue looks more "white" on the x-ray than usual indicating fluid, blood, cells, atelectasis-whatever.
