Italian term

sottovetro

Italian to English Art/Literary Food and food packaging
Hi folks
This expression is used in the food context (...ampia scelta di sottovetro, salumi...) and appears in lists of products offered on sale in, for example, delicatessens. I'm having the difficultest time attempting to find a reasonable solution for it and have thus far simply put "preserves" or "preserves in jars". It ain't pickles, what appear separate, and it ain't sott'oli, as are likewise. The Internet is very unhelpful in this particular respect, but the authors of the work I am translating use the expression very freely. Are they out on a limb or am I?
TIA
Derek

bottled products

I say this with some hesitation, but doesn't "bottled" refer to things preserved in glass - even if the glass is not a bottle but a jar?
I know we "bottle jam" in a jam jar!

Even The Beed has it on one site!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Angela An eminently sensible solution that has unsurprisingly received plenty of agrees so 'bottled' it is. Thanks also to all the other answerers, whose time and trouble is much appreciated. "Jarred" (thanks Karice70) may be OK and the website looks interesting, but this word has an off-message alternative meaning in English so I am reluctant to use it. "Preserves" (thanks agtranslat) is a good option, but unfortunately I also have to translate "conserve", often in the same sentence, so it's a non/starter for me. Maximum Appreciation Derek "

produce packed/preserved in glass jars

as far as I can see there is no more elegant term than this but for me "preserves" also gives the idea. there are a lot of refs. to glass jars on various delicatessen/food sites. I would say that maybe in England we concentrate on what is in the jar rather than how it is presented, that's why we don't have a name for these type of products.

jarred

I've seen it used and accepted in this sector. Here's a link you may find of some help for your translation: http://www.acena.it/dizionario.html

Hope it helps.

bottling

Could you perhaps use "bottled products" or "products bottled in jars" (not a very good explication but still....).

"display case items," "under glass," "case enclosed"

This is commonly-heard usage in American-English, anyway. The significance can be two-fold: first, to identify visually that particular way in which said described items are displayed, and second, to refer to the maintained quality of these items insofar as they are perishable and safely protected in an enclosed but viewable environment, (hopefully!) free and separated from warm temperatures and relative bacteria, pests, human contact, etc. :-) Good luck! neutral Sarah Ponting : doesn't seem to fit the context too well "...ampia scelta di sottovetro, salumi..."
