Trattasi di sistema per passaggi a livello. Per "ingombro" si intende un qualsiasi tipo di oggetto o corpo che si trova vicino al PL che viene rilevato da un sensore per poi comandare l'apertura o chiusura delle barriere del PL. Quindi non si riferisce alle "dimensioni di ingombro" (overall dimensions), può andare un generico "encumbrance", secondo voi?

di solito per ingombro non si intende l'oggetto o corpo, ma lo spazio occupato da tale oggetto o corpo. Nel settore della grafica, ad esempio, viene usato come traduzione dell'inglese positioning. In questo caso potrebbe quindi trattarsi dell'area esaminata dai sensori.

obstruction
It can mean things like monitoring range etc. but I suspect it is more to do with the obstructing object (car etc.). The iobstruction may be 'detected' (see further below)
I like encumbrance but...
I came across this site http://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/LEGISLTN/SLS/1992/92SL062....
with the following phrase somewhere (I picked it off the Googlòe front page):
