OK... One more? Please?

For the English bowtie, Greek uses the French loan "papillon". In my experience, in spoken Modern Greek nowadays, one hears "papion" rather than "papiyon". Clearly the former derived from a faster pronunciation of the latter, as Greek language speakers have tried to make "papillon" their own, so to speak. What is more, the version "papion" has now been standardised in Greek dictionaries (eg Babiniotis), where it has been assigned "free variation" status as a lexical entry along with the fuller "papiyon".

Since the project is aimed at learners of Greek, I chose the more frequent and colloquial "papion". This is the feedback I have received:

"The form papion is totally unfamiliar to me. If it exists, it’s clearly a corruption of papiyion (papillon). On the other hand, the word papiyion is one I’ve heard and used many times."

Many thanks in advance for your feedback.

παπιγιόν (papillon)

Declined
Not "παπιόν"(papion), except in case that is pronounced by an illiterate person, or ironically.

Comment: "See Babiniotis' dictionary"
