Italian term

il verbale potè dormire tranquillo

Italian to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Autobiography
Contesto:

Grazie,

Barbara

The record ... gathered dust

Rephrased slightly so it reads as if written in English!

E così il verbale dei suoi colloqui con John Evans potè dormire tranquilo negli archivi

.....and so, the transcript of his dialogues with John Evans could sleep on serenely in the archives

the report could rest in peace

This is a commonly used idiom that may work. Although it is technically used as a respectful phrase to use regarding a deceased person, it is colloquially used to refer to just about anything.

"rest in peace
to lie dead peacefully for eternity.
(A solemn entreaty used in funeral prayers, eulogies, etc.)
- We prayed that the deceased would rest in peace. The bodies of the soldiers will rest in peace."

Typo (sorry):

First quote should read "let the report REST in peace" (rather than rests).
Example sentence:

"The chair of the meeting, the Cameroonian ambassador to the UN, concluded that if the former SR will not answer these questions, 'we will let THE REPORT RESTS IN PEACE.' "

"I read it but later I noticed many threads like this one. So, THE BOOK RESTS IN PEACE ON THE SHELF."

the report was allowed to remain undisturbed ...

I love Ivana's "gathered dust" but, if you want a slightly more literal translation while still using everyday English, this might be an option.
