Discussion

Anna ZANNELLA (asker) Mar 11, 2013:
i just compare the Kudoz with the average wages and working conditions offered by the 5 star companies that also contact me through this website - from that point of view its easy to see the need to check and recheck.

new contests or nuances Hi everybody, do not forget new contests (same terms) and/or nuances. I am definitely for discussing glossary terms again and again. Many given/chosen solutions are far from being perfect. There is always margin for improvement or further linguistic analyses. This is actually the objective of these fora, isn't it?
Anna ZANNELLA (asker) Mar 6, 2013:
Firstly, I dont post here to entertain anybody, I post when I really need help, an 2) if there is an IT filter problem with Proz, (my legal and business filter results in 28 hits of no relevance) its not really something I can do anything about, .... nor wish to.
philgoddard Mar 6, 2013:
Well, it sounds like I'm in a minority here, but I think there's no point having a glossary if people can't be bothered to use it and just ask new questions every time.
You wouldn't look at a great long list of entries in a paper dictionary, decide it was too much trouble to read, and ask the dictionary writers to produce an entry just for you.
This also makes the glossary unusable, because there are so many near-identical questions. If I were you and I'd posted that answer, Thomas, I'd be annoyed to find that my time had been wasted because the question had been asked previously.
Thomas Roberts Mar 6, 2013:
glossary entries Are by definition made by people unsure of the meaning.
And how do we decide which of the 53? Pick one at random?
philgoddard Mar 6, 2013:
Since you're such a busy man and I have nothing to do, here is one of the many previous questions which yours duplicates:
http://www.proz.com/kudoz/italian_to_english/other/3017698-p...
It doesn't mean "punto o elemento centrale di attrazione o guida", it means a department, or unit, or centre, or whatever you care to call it.
Anna ZANNELLA (asker) Mar 6, 2013:
Usually, it really doesnt bother me when someone posts something they dont understand, because I AM TOO BUSY working TO NOTICE - you should try it Phil. The last place I would hang out for converstaion is the Proz question page .. sheesh!
Anna ZANNELLA (asker) Mar 6, 2013:
Phil, I read the glossary. It made no sense to me. Much of the Kudoz is unreliable. (Gee your paradigms must be different Phil. - shouldnt you be working instead of trolling the Questions page?) I also checked the internet and a number of dictionaries. "Punto o elemento centrale di attrazione o guida" ??? I see now what Thiomas means. Thanks Thomas.
philgoddard Mar 6, 2013:
Yes, I can, with the greatest of ease. There are lots of useful suggestions, and I don't see any point in discussing it yet again. You shouldn't post new questions just because you don't feel like reading the glossary.
Anna ZANNELLA (asker) Mar 6, 2013:
Phil ... If you can figure it out form the Kudoz good luck to you.

Specialist Unit

polo invariably gets used in Italian to suggest dynamism and advanced thinking/manufacturing (though how they actually fare in practice is another story)
Note from asker:
Ahhhhh "Punto o elemento centrale di attrazione o guida".(Dictionary) I see.

specialist centre/hub

or perhaps 'specialist hub'
the other solution does not really express the idea of Italian 'polo' (centro di aggregazione e convergenza)

and actually 'polo' means several units together..
polo di eccellenza sanitario - medical sentre of exellence
polo di sviluppo industriale - industrial development centre

definizione < TRECCANI
Polo2
[..] Con riferimento a determinate attività, centro di aggregazione e di convergenza, e più esplicitamente (con evidente influenza dell’ingl. pool, solo apparentemente affine a polo), consorzio, coalizione d’imprese: p. industriale, p. alimentare; p. chimico; il p. siderurgico nazionale; il p. italiano delle telecomunicazioni; p. scolastico, organismo scolastico che riunisce in sé diversi istituti.

Pardon me, nothing to do with the 'Italian mess'. The term 'polo' is very positevely connotated in Italian. Therefore, in this case they aim at becoming a centre of excellence or they just let it intend that are already one... no matter what size.... Moreover, they used the word 'competencies' in the plural and the National Institute for Social Security (It is now a cluster of agencies -http://www.justlanded.com/english/Italy/Italy-Guide/Jobs/Soc...

All the best

Note from asker:
I agree on the meaning on the word, however modern Italian is a mess that often verges on gibberish and misappropriation of meaning, and this is one case. It's one small office, probably just a desk in the local municipal office.

Your question isn't about law or business, it's about social security. If you look at a few questions from almost any subject area, the meaning of the word soon becomes clear.
