German term

im falschen Feld (Satzverstaendnis)

Waere dankbar fuer Vorschlaege :)

Thank you everyone for your suggestions :)

Tischtennis?

Thank you both Johanna and Lis. However, the respondent/doctor is the guy they are trying to "sell" this new product to. He has nothing to do with the development. Do you think I could still use "the wrong playing field" in the sense that this product would not be worth being brought to the market?
Johanna Timm, PhD Feb 27, 2013:
Feld
a) es könnte sein, dass man mit dem Feld “auf etwas gesetzt hat” (wie beim Roulette) ;
Lis Liesicke Feb 27, 2013:
playing on the wrong field I would understand it as maybe: if it doesn't do what every other medicament does then we would be playing on the wrong field, we would be trying to develop something that doesn't even cover the basics or do what all other products do

on the wrong track

If the product only does what all the others do, we're on the wrong track. Or, we're headed in the wrong direction.
Peer comment(s):

agree Johanna Timm, PhD : this sounds very plausible.

no business being here

Sounds like the reduction of HbA1c levels is a "low" bar that all products must clear to be competitive. He says, of course, their product does that. If it didn't, they'd have no business being there (= unable to compete)

I think your initial idea is probably correct. Doc seems to be hinting there would be no point in "discussing" (evaluating) this product any further if it didn't meet minimum requirements (reduction of HbA1c levels) like other meds apparently do.
He'd be thinking "What are we doing here?" (or "Why is this/why are we even here?). Keep in mind that's just a rhetorical and hypothetical comment. Any colloquialism conveying the idea that either the product/evaluators would be (or feel like they are) in the wrong place if that product failed to meet standards would do nicely. In this case, I'd suggest using a variation on the cartoon caption below.. ("We'd be in the wrong movie here if product x didn't provide that benefit.")

Note from asker:
Thank you Michael. It is not "his" product,however. He is supposed to evaluate it and decide upon a stimulus he was presented with if this medication would be able to replace any of the products he is currently using. This guy is really killing me. He mainly speaks in metaphors and makes it difficult for me to provide a professional content analysis ;)
