curso

Hello,

I'm translating a student's results for a degree:

This is how "curso" is used.

CURSO 1 (COMPLETO) PLAN 74 COMUNES
CALCULO INFINITESIMAL CONVALIDIDADA C. ESTA 91/92
(List of subjects follows)

Then

CURSO 2 (COMPLETO) PLAN 74 COMUNES O.70 JUN. 91/92

I know "curso" can be both "course" and "year" (handy) but PLAN 74 seems to be Course (od Studies) to me.

Is "Curso" year?

There are six "cursos" running from 91/92 to 96/97 so I think it must be academic year but would like confirmation, please.

Many thanks.

Discussion

Henry Hinds Jan 30, 2013:
CONTEXT I don't know if it is so critical here, but due to the fact that eduational terminology and institutions vary so much from country to country, it is always advisable, and in fact mandatory to mention both origin and destination countries.
Charles Davis Jan 30, 2013:
To put it another way "Plan" is short for "Plan de estudios" and is normally translated as "Curriculum", or sometimes as "Programme".

I would normally use "academic year" when referring to 1991-92 (dates), for example, and Year 1, 2, 3 when referring to Curso 1, 2, 3 etc. of the degree programme. For "curso" without a number following, referring to a year of the programme rather than a date, I often tend to use "year of study".
Patricia ONeill Jan 29, 2013:
Plan In case it helps, we generally talk of Plan when we refer to a the different subjects a student must take to graduate, and the order in which they must be studied. The 74 would refer to the year when this Plan became official.
