Discussion

Montse Ballesteros Oct 6, 2012:
Without any further context, it could be any of our options. You'd better ask your client.
Carl Stoll Oct 5, 2012:
If it's Uruguay, "boliche" means grocery store Use of "boliche" to mean "bowling alley" is NOT used or known in southern South America. It MUST be "small grocery store".
Montse Ballesteros Oct 5, 2012:
Hopefully the context after that part will help you decide whether it is a "bowling alley" or a "bar/shop".
GillW (MCIL) (asker) Oct 5, 2012:
it's either Argentina or Uruguay (depending on the witness making the statement). The hearing is held in Uruguay.
Lisa McCarthy Oct 5, 2012:
@ Gill What country is the source text from and what audience is the translation targeted at? 'Boliche' has a few different meanings depending on where it's used.

grocery store / small store / disco / bar / snack bar

These are the various options my dictionaries give my for that part of the world.

I think you're going to have to ask the client to be 100% sure though.

bowling alley, centre, lane // bar // club // little shop

8. m. And., Arg., Bol., Par. y Ur. Establecimiento comercial o industrial de poca importancia, especialmente el que se dedica al despacho y consumo de bebidas y comestibles.

9. m. Arg. y Ur. Bar, discoteca.

¡Suerte!

neutral philgoddard : Do people still use this word? It sounds a bit 1970s to me.

Most definitely, as per my refs, and my daughters who have never heard of the 1970s and attend or organize "pre-bos" to get a few decent drinks in before setting off to the disco at 2am.

LAm - small grocery store
Cono Sur - cheap snack bar, gambling den
Andes - cheap bakery

Peer comment(s):

agree Marina Soldati : Sí, con énfasis en "cheap". Suele utilizarse en forma despectiva, y puede que este sea el caso, por lo de "se ha valorizado".
