a suggestion. I'm considering your example of batik, but Maori textiles aren't limited to that and in fact entail integrated production processes depending on the item. Dyeing itself (as well as decoloration) is by boiling in vats, except in the case of hand painting. Throughout the area, starch as a (rather unstable) fixative is common.
