As far as I know pendeja is like tonta in "Dominican" so "she might be nobody's fool but she's also a forgiving soul" but wait for a native to confirm...
lorenab23 Aug 7, 2012:
Well Junot Díaz is a Dominican writer and the asker does say at the top "Dominican-Latino" slang ;-)

Cultural reference... Hi, I was just wondering which country this is from, since pendeja can be translated a few different ways. ^_^

Spanish term (edited): pendeja

suffer fools (gladly/lightly/easily)

This expression comes to mind here. There are variations of it, of which I am most familiar with "suffer fools lightly", but I think "suffer fools" on its own may do the trick.
Example sentence:

She may not suffer fools (gladly/lightly/easily), but she’s also a forgiving soul.

She might not take shit from anybody...

I would avoid trying to translate this so literally, and would instead suggest opting for something along the lines of:

"She might not take shit from anybody but she's also a forgiving soul".

Regards

Jack
