I can´t seem to come up with something for 'conciliar' that sounds right here. Any suggestions welcome. For the UK.
A partir del 1 de enero de este año, Guatemala ocupa un escaño en el Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas. Es de destacar que Guatemala, pese a ser país fundador de Naciones Unidas nunca había integrado el Consejo de Seguridad. This is one way round it, I think: used "proved to be" or something similar with "incompatible", rather than doing it directly with a verb equivalent to "conciliar"; "reconcile" doesn't work very well, though it's not that bad. I think this sounds better and ends up meaning just the same.
"Aspiration" is OK, but "ambition" seems slightly more natural to me. Here's an actual example from the NY Times:
"Mr. Chávez has criticized American efforts to thwart Venezuela’s ambition to secure a seat this year on the United Nations Security Council. "
