French term

Lettre de réserve

French to English Bus/Financial Insurance Claims settlement letters

Didn't find any solid examples of this in the insurance field. Thanks for your help.

Discussion

MatthewLaSon Jun 19, 2012:
Québec/France difference I would like to say that "lettre de réserve" in Québec seems to have the meaning of an ROR letter, as suggested by pooja_chic. It seems to be short for "lettre de réserve de droits". However, in France, this does not appear to be the meaning; in fact, I pulled up an article online of a French person taking a "lettre de réserve" to his "garagiste", all suggesting that this is a letter by the insurance company requesting further proof/evidence of his car damage before his claim can be processed (takes car to mechanic for the damage assessment/ estimate).

I suppose, here, that this is a document from Québec.

Reservation of rights letters mainly inform the insured of coverage and policy defenses, thereby preserving the insurer’s right to assert such defenses. In many jurisdictions, the reservation of rights may allow the insurer to withdraw from the defense when there is no potential for coverage under the policy. The ROR letters allow insurers to decline indemnifying the insured for any portion of a judgment not covered under the policy.
