Afternoon!

I'm translating a list of survey responses on customers' impressions of a new printer released in France - three of the answers contain the word "recul" and I'm not sure what they mean - one just says "pas de recul", another "manque de recul", while the third says:

Je n'ai pas assez de recul pour donner une autre note.

Any ideas?

Yes, though they all have glowing reviews and nobody mentions any kind of timeframe, which is what threw me at the start....

Hi everyone! Yes, the question was "What is the reason for the score that you gave?" - I think the option of not having had it long enough seems to fit best, as Claire said a level of interpretation is usually required in these kinds of surveys, but I think this might be what they're getting at, given some of the other responses I've seen!

'recul' in this context just means that they haven't had it for long enough to be able to judge, i.e. not enough experience.

Knowing the exact wording of the question (and knowing how the respondent answered to get to that question - i.e did they have to own the printer?) might help but I think it could be interpreted either way without more context. As always with market research responses, a level of interpretation is required but if in doubt, Paul could leave a note to say it could be interpreted either way

@ Leslie Perhaps I'm mistaken but here "recul" doesn't only refer to time. These customers could be lacking a greater perspective regarding what the market had to offer in terms of printers. Maybe they used "manque de recul" (which litterally means "being too close") to be able to compare the printer with other models.

I think this is recul in the sense of distance of time, the respondents are not able to give an opinion because they haven't been using the printer for long
