Spanish to English Bus/Financial Slang
I have very little context for this, only that there's a Latin American usage of the word to mean "pago indebido en especies". It seems to me that it might be translated as "back-hander", "backsheesh", "pourboire", but I don't really know.

Also, does any know how widespread this usage is in Latin America?

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

This is completely irrelevant, but I just thought I'd mention that in Spain "paga" is what pocket-money is usually called ("mis padres me dan una paga semanal").

context I'm not asking for more context (for once!) just suggesting it depends on the context. I don't think it has a specific meaning as a 'bribe', but if you look up 'una paga' (to get the noun) plus 'corrupción' there are lots of articles giving examples of corrupt officials or politicians taking illegal or dodgy payments. In this sense I don't think it's any different from how we would use 'payments' in eg the current 'police payments' scandal in the UK (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012/feb/11/sun-journalists-...

@lorenab23 Yes, I think that's the sense. I've never heard "paga" used to mean "soborno" myself - but that's what I'm being told. So I'm trying to check if anyone is familiar with that use and whether it's as strong as an illegal "bribe" or is just an unethical "pay-off".

I don't think the term "paga" is by any means limited to illegal payments, but it certainly could be used, for instance, to mean: "And now you're going to pay up".... (" Y ahora; me la pagas o me la pagas..." etc.)

Thanks eski. Payment is certainly the general sense - but have you ever come across it in the sense of something underhand, perhaps even illegal (una mordida)?
