Spanish term

subcultura incivilista

Spanish to English Other Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Hola!
¿Cómo dejo eso en inglés? Mi contexto es el que sigue: "también la denominan (a las condiciones propensas para caer en el delito) subcultura incivilista, en tanto que Sherman (1998) la llama cultura opositora (oppositional culture) o “contracultura”".

¿Alguna idea?

Muchas gracias!!

Discussion

Charles Davis Jan 27, 2012:
"Disaffected" sounds good, but to me it is much milder than "incivilista". "Disaffected" is discontented and somewhat alienated, but "incivilista" seems to imply something more strongly opposed to civilised values.
Muriel Vasconcellos Jan 27, 2012:
Agree with Matt I think 'disaffected' sounds best.
Abraal (asker) Jan 26, 2012:
I've never heard "incivilista" before, so I'm a bit confused as well :p
liz askew Jan 26, 2012:
dear oh dear, this sort of thing drives me up the wall:)
Simon Bruni Jan 26, 2012:
@ Liz Looks like an example of inventive use of language by the author.

I might go for disaffected subculture. If it's a sociological text the author may not want to weigh down the offenders with negative adjectives. In any case more context would be handy.
Abraal (asker) Jan 26, 2012:
Toda la razón Habla sobre los factores que llevan a las personas a cometer delitos. Uno de estos factores, al parecer, sería vivir dentro de una subcultura incivilista que borra valores y normas establecidas de la mente de la gente.
Simon Bruni Jan 26, 2012:
What subculture are we talking about here? It helps to have some background information on the text (i.e. what it is about). This isn't always apparent from one sentence.

antisocial subculture

One option. Given that "civilista" implies subscribing and conforming to the norms of civil society, the opposite could be described as "antisocial".

I am thinking particularly of the phrase "condiciones propensas para caer en el delito" as a guide to what this means: not so a political stance as a kind of alienation.
