Italian term

pontificazioni

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation
Il materiale ha una capacità importante nell’evitare pontificazioni per cui qualunque sistema di alimentazione sarebbe possibile senza particolari accorgimenti.

In relation to a biomass boiler that uses oat husk to generate renewable energy.

Anyone any idea what is meant by 'pontificazioni' here?

Discussion

Ivana UK (asker) Jul 7, 2011:
Bridging certainly makes sense - thanks very much to everyone for helping me out with this one, would never have got this without you (didn't know this meaning of bridging in English).
Dr Lofthouse Jul 7, 2011:
In the last example, the word seems to mean 'internal bridging' -if this word had something to do with 'bridges' in the other example, there are one or two instances to 'material bridging' with reference to the way they build up at the mouth of an outlet, and stop flowing..eg

..would it make sense, in this document: ie, does feeding oats in as a fuel prevent the feeder system from 'clogging up'??
Ivana UK (asker) Jul 7, 2011:
Another instance of pontificazioni: La densità bulk è dell’ordine dei 200-220 kg/m3 e il materiale presenta una certa “sofficità” che lo rende praticamente esente da pontificazioni al proprio interno.
Dr Lofthouse Jul 7, 2011:
Not that I'm aware of, but 'alimentazione' can mean 'power supply'or 'feeding', and since the oat husks are being used as a 'feedstock', I think they are using 'pontificate' outside of its strict definition
Ivana UK (asker) Jul 7, 2011:
I simply don't know! Was hoping pontificazione had some meaning I was unaware of..
Dr Lofthouse Jul 7, 2011:
I think 'alimentazione' here is 'feedstock' rather than 'power'.
Dr Lofthouse Jul 7, 2011:
Could it just be a poor use of the verb 'to pontificate' e.g. 'if we use this material, we avoid having to pontificate about what other power system we use, as it would not involve any additional safety precautions being put in place'
Being Earnest Jul 7, 2011:
Could it refer to something like rectifiers: bridge rectifiers, diode rectifiers

bridging/creating bridges

I think what they are talking about is the effect of bridging or creating bridges. This happens, for example in a hopper when the material flows out of the bottom but the overlying material sort of creates a bridge (an arch of material) and the hopper is effectively plugged. It is not stopped up but the flow stops because of this bridge. Then you have to vibrate or beat on the side to break the bridge and start the material flowing again. Sometimes they add flow enhances (for example to plastics) to prevent this.
Note from asker:
Thanks for explaining - had never heard of bridging in this sense but then again I'm no expert on boilers!
Thank you!

Pontificate

I think this is just inexact use of the verb 'to pontificate'

'if we use this material,we avoid having to pontificate (think very deeply) about what other power systems we can use without having to take additional safety precautions'

'the material' being the feedstock, 'oat husk' being the suggested alternative 'sistema di alimentazione'

Bridging

Not sure, as I have never seen 'pontificare' in a Materials Science dictionary .

'Material Bridging' happens when material being fed from a feed system builds up at the outlet , impeding its flow.

'The material avoids bridging, which, for the feed system means we dont have to put any additional safety precautions in place....

i.e. oat husks flow as easily as the other material we were using before (assuming they were using a solid previously??)

Thanks for this, you've been a great help :)
