The clan assembled; a Council of Witness was elected to hear the case, and three hours later her people stripped her of command.
I am not sure what 'council of witness' might mean in this context. The setting is feudalistic. The woman in question is the clan leader, she has broken an essential rule, and now the clan is sitting in judgment. I would have expected an expression like 'jury' and would appreciate it, if anyone came up with a technical term.

Jh. als "an Anglo-Saxon Council made up of a varying number of nobles, prelates, and influential officials and convened from time to time to advise the king on administrative and judicial matters"
