Spanish term

solidaria

Spanish to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters welcome speech at conference
Well......the concept's fine..solidarity.. very positive but how to keep the flow....in a speech at a conference. Solidary?? ok - it's a word but...supportive??? Can a continent be supportive?? social/socially responsible or someother wordplay on the social theme...it's got me thinking...
Your suggestions please. The whole sentence:
El papel de las universidades en la construcción de una Europa unida, cohesionada y solidaria es fundamental.

other synonyms are already taken: cohesive, united ... so I'm offering this as an option
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : Personally I would leave it out - as you say, they're all synonyms, and just because there are three words in Spanish doesn't mean there should be three in English. But if not, there are lots of words you could use.

I'd turn some things around: a united, cohesive Europe of solidarity. Just a thought.

with a sense of responsibility towards its members

your term brings to mind the attitude of the economically powerful EU members such as Germany towards Greece, which as you know has recently been in a terrible economic plight, striving to keep itself together in the face of huge public debt. These stronger states have indicated their willingness to back support measures for Greece, simply as a gesture of solidarity from one member to another, rather than shunning the country as too "weak".
