Italian to English Other
Hullo folks.
This is a bit of an odd message, so you'll bear with me I hope.
Some minutes ago, a contribuor to our SC accused me of being a liar - stating that I am not a native speaker of English. This is tantamount to saying that I have posted a fictitious profile on this site.
I wonder how any of you would feel if someone were to say this to you, when you earn your living due to the fact that you are a native speaker.

But what I have found more worrying is that this same person states that apparently many of you are unhappy with my manner of moderating, that I am aggressive, rude and I think the word was "bolshy".
I'm sorry if I have given this impression and I am doubly sorry that those of you who have had a problem with this have not contacted me directly, but have grumbled amongst yourselves.

I would like to say that if anyone does have a problem, pls write to me directly and we'll try and sort it out, but also pls remember that lots of us write quickly, as time is at a premium, that there is never (on my part) any intention of offending or being rude (those of you who know me personally will vouch for that).
I simply bash out my messages, trying to get straight to the point in order not to take up too much of your time.
And, of course, despite being accused of lying about being British, I am, in fact, British, and I have a very British sense of humour, so my attempts to be funny may not always be successful.
I would be pleased to hear your comments (not too harsh on me please, but constructive!)
Thanks for your time
Angela

If you're effective, you can't expect to be popular

Angela. As a recent participant, I can only say it is reassuring to have an obvious professional overseeing things.
I imagine there were some who felt threatened by your recent comment on translations into a non-native language but that was only a (valid) opinion even if it was one that could occupy the forums for months.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Well, folks I wasn't going to grade, but Russell's quotation is too wonderful miss points ... seamlessly, eh! I'd like to thank you all for your support - I have my off days but I do make an effort to be reasonable and like all the rest of you, I'm human (almost) and very isolated. I'd also like to thank you for being such a civilised and thoroughly sporting bunch of colleagues, always prepared to help and be constructive. Many of you may well frequent the fora and the other language combinations so you'll be aware of how unpleasant things can get when people lose it. For those of you in Italy, we were the first ProZ.com country to meet up and it started a trend all over the world. I have been attempting to get another meeting organised and have failed miserably so far, but let's hope for later in the year, with some surprises in store. Total respect e massima simpatia Angela PS - and yes, folks, Derek blew my gaff - I'm a Geordie... one of the famous Whitley Bay Arnones!!! "

I did not even realize that you are a Moderator

because you have always been above-board in any communications. Never mind the perennial detractors - keep up the good work!

my two cents

Greetings Angela,

I am poking my nose in this affair, even if I am not a native speaker of English myself, and have not had the opportunity to interact with you.

All I wish to point out is that name-calling and back-stabbing are hardly behaviors becoming a professional. I have no clue whether or not you are a native British, but the people engaging in this kind of childish letting off of steam in a professional forum such as this one...well, I have a clue I would not put too much stock in their opinions.

Best of luck...e pazienzia!

Angela, just writing back to specify this is a note of support...might not have been so clear from my spirally syntax ;-)

keep it up

I looked back to yr message of 30/1/2002 about non-native speaker questions and agreed with yr observations. It must be upsetting to come in for such an attack. You are right that email and quick messages often lead to misunderstandings and I hope that's all it boils down to.

..as they say...

You can't please all of the people all of the times...So..the answer you should've given him or her is " That's for you(Sarah) to know and for him/her to find out" if you are or not a native speaker..I had once a problem with a rude member and you helped out without any attitude..so.........keep on steering ahead..

Dear Angela,

You wrote:

Yet, most of the time, you do it with British gloves, which makes us, Polish moderators, feel ashamed and embarrassed at how direct we get while trying to effectively process all the messages in our job of volunteers serving the community. And yes, I do attest to your native British sense of humour...
