Idiomatic, I admit, but I can imagine this word being used in news articles in magazines such as The Economist. In fact, here is a sentence in a recent article in The Economist about the credit crunch:
"If firms cannot cut wages, then as falling prices squeeze profits, they will cut jobs."

: Of course you would find this in a financial context. Squeezed, slashed, cut, butchered - the more graphic the better.
