Discussion

Adsion Liu Feb 6, 2009:
Not so easy to understand completely such style of texts:-)
Adsion Liu Feb 6, 2009:
So it's why I was explaining...
Shirley Lao Feb 6, 2009:
It is only my guess. I am not definitely sure about it.
Adsion Liu Feb 6, 2009:
Shirley Lao Feb 6, 2009:
I believe the 淡泻 in 非若淡泻之无害 is used to compare the effects of a certain herbal medicine (澤瀉) with 木通. Both 木通 and 澤瀉 are diuretic although I don't think 澤瀉 is harmless if taken in a large quantity. However, I am not sure that it is a typo.

slight diarrhoea

mild diarrhea

As this term comes under Medical (general), the translated word should be one understood by the layman. Hence from the word itself, when applied in the medical realm, it is a literal meaning unless it is applied differently in TCM. But taking the term in context in this case (TCM) from a linguistic perspective, mild diarrhea should be appropriate.
