Spanish term

colada

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general) A Standard Operating Procedure
This is a text on Standard Operating Procedures and this part is about the procedure for receiving materials, definitions, etc. This definitiation, referring to the word "Supply" states:

Cuando en un mismo envío existan dos o más lotes de elementos diferentes, a cada uno de ellos se le dará independientemente el tratamiento de suministro. Incluso se dará tratamiento de suministro a cada ***colada de un mismo perfil y envío***.

I haven't a clue that "colada" means here.

Many thanks!

margaret caulfield (asker) Sep 20, 2008:
Thanks, Taña. I hadn't realized that the subject had been changed, for I've been getting on with rest of the text. I was slightly taken aback by some of the responses, but now I know why!
Taña Dalglish Sep 20, 2008:
Thanks MC: That was one thing throwing me as I was sure that I had not seen Metallurgy before. I am sure with additional context, there will be a few willing souls out there. Luck and have a good w/end.
margaret caulfield (asker) Sep 20, 2008:
Hi, Taña. Here's more text. I don't know who changed the subject, but I think that was quite wrong. 1.- OBJETO

MC: Can you expand on the context please? How does receiving? “definitions” tie into SOPS and Supply? Supply of what exactly? What are SOPS relating to? Thanks TD.

batch

Just my 2 cents here, but I think this "colada" simply means "batch", with no specific technical connotation being involved.

Hope that helps...
Note from asker:
Thanks, Daniel. This could be it, but I'll till wait a bit.
Peer comment(s):

agree Donald Scott Alexander : I like "batch" but in the context of delivering materials I just realized that the term "lot" may be more appropriiate.

Thanks anyway!

IATE shows "tubo de colada" as "delivery tube" - this would seem to fit with your context...
Note from asker:
Thanks, Lisa. I did see this on I.A.T.E (which I use a lot), but I'm still not too sure. I'll wait and see.

heat

A "colada" is a batch of molten metal from which the products (steel profiles in this case) are made.

There is a difference between "casting" and "heat" (which is why I propose "heat"): "Casting" is more used in the sense of "moulding" (pouring molten metal inside a mould.

Note that "heat" itself may carry different meanings in Metallurgy, depending on the context. Thus, if a melting operation is concerned (as is this case), it translates as "colada". If not (tempering a batch of pieces, for instance), it translates as "calda".

Of course, this is not "cast in iron" as the saying goes. This all comes from my experience, and I will not reject other translations or meanings, not even in Spain's Spanish. But I think it caters for the nuences.

I changed the subject, Margaret, but -in view especially of the new context- I agree with you that this is not appropriate. "Colada" here -though being a specific metallurgy term- is just a very secondary item.

Getting back to the point after seeing the new context: "Colada" here is very akin to production batch: The quality of the end products to be delivered (for the steel profiles the "suministros" of them, as defined), is dependent on their composition, and this is homogenous only WITHIN each "colada". Therefore, they say that a "suministro" of profiles is defined, not only by the measurements and / or tolerances, but also by composition, and that's why they will consider different "suministros" for the same rolled profile (dimensionally).

That is, a "suministro" is a form of getting traceability, both dimensionally (but in which case there would be one only), and on composition (which is defined by the "colada", or "heat", as I said above), and which will change quite often, both for the shape and size and for the same supplier.

Auch. I hope I have made it clear, though I rarely bump into such difficulties in explaining.
Note from asker:
Hi, psicutrinius. I don NOT think you should have changed the subject matter. This is a manual for a business. I do know the difference, you know?
I changed the subject back, psicutrinius, but, in the future, I suggest you ask for clarification first from the asker. I think several answerers have felt quite confused thanks to the change you made. You just have to see their responses!

lot

I just remembered that the word "lot" is used more often than "batch" when talking about purchases and deliveries of materials.

No problem!

I could not find anything else to indicate that "colada" had another meaning :-)
Note from asker:
Many thanks for your suggestion, liz, but I didn't mention "metallurgy". Another peer changed it. Thanks anyway, but this really does not fit here.
