Italian term
alcool etilico/etere etilico
Italian to English
Medical
This is from a toxicology report. The entire phrase is "Determinazione dell'alcool etilico mediante tecnica gascromatografica in spazio di testa". At first I thought it just meant "alcohol level", but later on in the document I find "etere etilico" (not related, really, but, in my mind etere and etilico don't really go together), so now I'm doubting. I also am having a bit of trouble with "gascromatografica".
Thanks for any help!

I would GUESS \'mediante\' means \'using\' but there is definitely something called \'gas chromatography\' tho you might be able to drop \'technique\' after it.

Gas chromatography - specifically gas-liquid chromatography - involves a sample being vapourised and injected onto the head of the chromatographic column. The sample is transported through the column by the flow of inert, gaseous mobile phase. The column itself contains a liquid stationary phase which is adsorbed onto the surface of an inert solid.
Have a look at this schematic diagram of a gas chromatograph:

this is the internal union of puer and applied chemisdtry name - check it out for possible use in this context

NB: important change
ethyl alcohol & diethyl ether !!!!!!!!
your feeling that etere and etilico don\'t really go together is right: it\'s just a bad, bad way to say \'diethyl ether\'
gas chromatography -- sure, our colleagues are right

ethyl alcohol, more commonly ethanol and diethyl ether.
if the original doc. specifies ethyl alcohol then use it, if not then ethanol is the iupac accepted name.
