English term

a lot of cats to hang out with

English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings drumming
"From your playing I can sense you could almost start doing a jazz trio, is that something you would ever be interested in doing?"
"Yeah, absolutely, that’s another world I want to get into. I’m sure in a certain amount of time that will happen. ***I’ve got a lot of cats to hang out with!*** I live very close to the New York area and there are some really serious guys in that area. I think at some point right now there’s some other things I want to do. I’m actually doing another couple of projects on the side and when Coheed have some time off, I could venture into. I’m keeping very busy."

Could anyone please clarify for me what this expression means?
This in an interview with a drummer.
I'll appreciate any suggestions.

cats = guys

I wants to get into jazz, and he knows a lot of other musicians he can get together and play jazz with.

Explanation should read "He wants to get into jazz", of course.

neutral kyanzes : "I wants?" Was that deliberate?

No, not at all, it should read "He wants"
agree Wil Hardman (X) : Cats is not a metaphor its an expression- to my knowledge used a lot in the 1960s- a 'groovy way of saying 'guys'- hanging out=spending time.

fellow jazz musician (jazz player)

alley cats hang out together it's like guys and gals with the same interest. Cats are musical too so this metaphor fits.
He's got a lot of those musically interested friends
