That makes 2 of us, Eileen:-( The closest I could come [in a different context] was "discharge"..the others seemed logical options---but all really an uneducated guess--without more context. I also thought of a possible connection to "projectiles" but that doesn't fit very well with "particle fragments", at least IMHO. I truly hope someone comes along who can genuinely help.
